Now in its 24th year, Picasso Pets is more than a fundraiser — it’s a celebration of the extraordinary bond between people and their pets, brought to life through one-of-a-kind works of art. The name pays homage to the artistic spirit of Pablo Picasso, who once said, “Every child is an artist.” At Hand in Paw, we believe every pet is an artist, too...especially when their paw prints become the first strokes on a canvas.
One of the most frequent questions we get asked is, "Why is the event called Picasso Pets?" So, we thought a little explanation was in order!
Here’s how it works: Donors (the "Presenters") and their pets (the "Artist") team up with a local artist (the "Muse") to create a custom masterpiece. It all begins with a playful painting session, where pets leave their mark with non-toxic paint and a little encouragement — as shown in the video below! The Muse then transforms that paw-painted canvas into a stunning, museum-worthy work of art.
In the early days of Picasso Pets, these finished artworks were auctioned off at the event . That meant donors sometimes had to bid against other folks to keep their own pet’s portrait. Today, that model has evolved. Presenters now donate the commission fee up front, supporting Hand in Paw’s mission while getting to keep their pet’s portrait as a treasured keepsake. Each piece is unveiled at the gala in the dazzling Picasso Pets Art Exhibit, generously sponsored this year by Kay Aldridge.
Meanwhile, the live auction has taken on a life of its own — featuring luxury getaways, rare wines and spirits, exclusive dinners, original art, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and the coveted Face of Picasso Pets package. The winner of this special item collaborates with Hand in Paw to help shape the next year’s event theme — and their pet becomes the star of the show, featured in all event marketing and promotions.
It’s a joyful fusion of creativity, community, and compassion — and it’s exactly what makes Picasso Pets such a beloved tradition in Birmingham and beyond.
Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a proud pet parent, or someone who believes in the healing power of therapy animals, Picasso Pets is your chance to be part of something as unique as it is meaningful.
