Hand in Paw’s Health & Well-Being pillar focuses on Animal-Assisted Therapy services for people facing medical, physical, and emotional challenges. Through trained volunteer Therapy Teams, we bring the power of human-animal connection to healthcare and care-based settings across Central Alabama.
Our Therapy Teams visit hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, early intervention programs, and other care environments where Animal-Assisted Therapy can support comfort, motivation, and well-being.
These visits may help reduce stress and anxiety, encourage participation in therapeutic activities, provide positive distraction from pain or worry, and offer moments of calm in environments that can feel overwhelming.
Animal-Assisted Therapy is a goal-directed intervention delivered in collaboration with a healthcare, rehabilitation, or human-service professional. In these settings, a Therapy Team may work alongside clinicians to support specific therapeutic goals over time.
In every setting, Hand in Paw Therapy Teams are trained to serve safely, respectfully, and professionally.
Therapy Teams can work alongside healthcare and rehabilitation professionals to support motivation, communication, movement, and emotional comfort.
A physical therapist might incorporate brushing a dog, offering treats, or walking beside a Therapy Animal to support fine motor skills, movement, or balance.
A speech therapist might invite a child to give verbal cues to a Therapy Animal to encourage communication and confidence.
Therapy Teams may provide positive distraction from pain or worry and create moments of peace in overwhelming care environments.
Hand in Paw Therapy Teams serve healthcare and care-based environments throughout Central Alabama.
