Sit, Stay Read!

About the Program

At Hand in Paw, we believe in the transformative power of animal-assisted therapy, not just for physical or emotional well-being but also for learning. One of our most impactful programs — Sit, Stay, Read! — combines the comfort of a furry friend with the joy of reading, helping children unlock their full potential, one page at a time.

Sit, Stay, Read! is a literacy initiative designed to support young readers by pairing them with professionally trained therapy animals and their handlers. The program creates a relaxed and nonjudgmental environment where children can practice their reading skills. The presence of a friendly, attentive animal turns what might otherwise feel like a challenge into a delightful and confidence-boosting experience.

Reading aloud can be intimidating, especially for children who are struggling with literacy, or are simply shy. A child may feel judged or pressured when reading in front of peers or adults. But with a gentle, nonjudgmental therapy animal as the audience, the pressure melts away.

Studies have shown that reading to animals can:

  • Increase reading fluency and comprehension
  • Reduce anxiety and improve focus
  • Foster a love for books and learning
  • Helps build self-esteem and confidence

Therapy animals provide unconditional acceptance, wagging their tails or purring as children read. This positive reinforcement encourages kids to keep going, building their confidence with each word they conquer. We partner with schools, libraries, and community organizations to bring this literacy initiative to children in need. The program primarily serves but is not limited to, K-12 students. Educators and parents alike have praised Sit, Stay, Read! for its ability to make reading fun and engaging for even the most reluctant readers.

Sit, Stay, Read! is more than a literacy program; it’s a testament to the unique bond between humans and animals. Together, we’re not just improving reading skills — we’re building confidence, fostering a love for learning, and creating brighter futures through Animal-Assisted Education.
