Every spring, hundreds of people and pups lace up for Mutt Strut — Hand in Paw’s dog-friendly 5k and 1-mile Fun Run packed with tail wags, neon flair, and community spirit. But behind the scenes of this feel-good event is a dynamic group of volunteers: Hand in Paw’s Junior Board.
Founded in 2009, Mutt Strut began as a way for the Junior Board to raise essential funds for Hand in Paw’s mission to improve human health and well-being through Animal-Assisted Therapy. Now in its 15th year, Mutt Strut is one of Hand in Paw's signature fundraising events, helping ensure these life-changing services remain free of charge.
The Junior Board itself is composed of passionate individuals, age 19 and up, who serve as ambassadors for Hand in Paw. They aim to raise awareness of HIP’s mission and programs through community outreach and events. Working with Hand in Paw’s Director of Advancement, Michael Hansen, they play a vital, volunteer-led role in building community support and future leadership.
Whether they’re planning Mutt Strut, rallying sponsors, or lending a hand at community events, the Junior Board leads with compassion, energy, and just the right amount of dog hair. Members have the opportunity to grow as leaders by taking on roles that guide event planning, public relations, and member recruitment — gaining valuable experience while making a real impact.
Members commit to attending regular meetings, contributing to committee work, and participating in fundraising events — all while spreading the word about the healing power of the human-animal bond. Plus, annual dues are just $25!
If you're 19 or older and looking for a way to give back, grow your network, and be part of something pawsitively impactful, consider applying to join the Junior Board.
